Haiti calm after firing of Prime Minister Michèle Pierre-Louis
The streets of Haiti were calm after the firingof Prime Minister Michèle Pierre-Louis and her government, and theinternational community urged a quick transition to a new leadership.
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Schoolsopened, public transportation ran as usual and Haitians went abouttheir daily struggle Friday as this Caribbean nation awoke to find thatPrime Minister Michèle Pierre-Louis' year-old government had beentoppled overnight.
Pierre-Louis' 18-member government was ousted by the Senate shortlyafter midnight Thursday following a raucous 10-hour session. Theconstitution allows any of the two chambers to dismiss a sittinggovernment.
On Friday, the international community issuedstatements respecting the decision, saying it was constitutional, butreiterated its support of Pierre-Louis. It also called on Haiti'spolitical class to act quickly to put a new government in place toavoid the instability that gripped the country last year after thefiring of the last prime minister, Jacques-Edouard Alexis................
